How to water without turning it into a ritual
Most houseplant problems start with a calendar. Plants do not follow one. They use water differently after a hot week, a dim monsoon day, or a change in pot size.

First check
Top 2 inches of soil
Best time
Morning or early afternoon
Drainage
Always make room for it
Keep in mind
Three useful things to remember.
- Feel the soil first; leaves alone are a late signal.
- Water deeply, let excess drain, then empty the saucer.
- A cool, cloudy week almost always means slower drying.
Use your hands
Push a finger into the top layer of the soil. If it is cool and clings to your skin, leave it. If it feels dry at the depth your plant's roots use, it is time to water.
Water thoroughly, less often
A gentle, full soak encourages roots to explore the whole pot. A daily splash only wets the surface and makes it difficult to learn what the plant actually needs.
Notice the season
In India, monsoon humidity and indoor AC can change a pot's drying time more than the temperature alone. Check more often during transitions, not simply on a fixed day.
